DBA/SSI supporting the Department of Defense Language Interpretation and Translation Enterprise II (DLITE II) multiple award Indefinite-Delivery/Indefinite-Quantity (IDIQ) contract issued by the U.S. Army Intelligence and Security Command (INSCOM). The multiple award IDIQ contract has a five-year base period, as well as a five-year option period with a total ceiling value of $9.8 billion. SSI was selected as one of 20 IDIQ contract awardees to provide foreign language interpretation, translation and transcription services. SSI was chosen as one of nine IDIQ awardees for the Force Projection mission area, which provides linguist services in support of forces engaged in humanitarian, peacekeeping, contingency, and combat operations. Drawing on MacB’s vast history and experience of delivering innovative intelligence and training solutions across multiple theaters, a team of national security and mission experts will provide program and project management support for the contract, as well as technical and field expertise, planning and training. TOMI Environmental Solutions and Astro Pak Settle Lawsuit Concerning TOMI’s Patents and IP Rights

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. and COSTA MESA, Calif., July 31, 2017 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — TOMI Environmental Solutions, Inc. (“TOMI”) (OTCQX:TOMZ) and Astro Pak Corporation (“Astro Pak”) announced today they have settled their litigation relating to TOMI’s patents and intellectual property rights.
The parties have agreed that TOMI is the sole owner of ionized hydrogen peroxide decontamination and sterilization technology, patents, and products, which TOMI markets under the brands Binary Ionization Technology® (BIT™) and SteraMist™. TOMI sued Astro Pak and its wholly owned subsidiary SixLog Corporation (“SixLog”) in California federal court for infringing TOMI’s United States Patent Nos. 6,969,487 and 7,008,592 and violating TOMI’s intellectual property rights by, among other things, indicating that TOMI’s technology and patents were proprietary to SixLog and marketing TOMI’s patented equipment with SixLog labels. Astro Pak and SixLog agreed to cease this conduct and pay TOMI a favorable cash payment. Astro Pak also agreed to assign its iHP mark to TOMI, complementing TOMI’s existing trademark and trade name protection. Adapted from journalist Michael Hastings’s nonfiction book “The Operators” and directed by Sundance Film Festival Award winner David Michôd (“Animal Kingdom,” “Hesher”), “War Machine,” which was released on May 26, is a satirical war film starring Oscar Award winner Brad Pitt (“Fight Club”), Anthony Hayes (“The Light Between Oceans”), John Magaro (“Unbroken) and Topher Grace (“Interstellar”).

Produced by Netflix and Plan B Entertainment, “War Machine” follows General Glenn McMahon (Pitt), a four-star U.S. general who’s sent to Afghanistan by the Obama administration in an effort to end the war. Dissatisfied with the way things are being run and believing that the American armed forces in Afghanistan can still win against the insurgence, McMahon openly goes against his orders– a move that eventually gets him called back to Washington to deliver his resignation.

As one of the main costumers for the portions of the film shot in United Arab Emirates, which is where the exterior scenes of the film that served as Afghanistan were shot, Sass spent weeks on location between Abu Dhabi and Ras al Khaima where she was the person mainly responsible for dressing the personal security detail of Pitt’s character General Glenn McMahon, as well as the local extras and other cast members.

Working with Lisa is like working with two people simultaneously, she is everywhere, she does three to four jobs and none of them suffers. To say that she is hardworking would not give her justice… She is organized and manages to organize everybody around her, and at the same time be proactive, creative and artistic.

One of the uniquely challenging aspects of Sass’s job as the costumer for the UAE portion of “War Machine” was maintaining continuity when it came to the costumes worn by the background talent in the film.

“Dressing Afghani locals as extras was a big challenge because none of them had ever worked on a film and most of them didn’t understand any English,” Sass explained. “We had to be very observant and constantly have an eye on them so they wouldn’t redo their turban after every take or change the way they wore their costume.”

It’s understandable to see how someone who’s never been involved in a big film production might not grasp the importance of maintaining their overall appearance from take to take, but that meant Sass had to work double time keeping a diligent eye on all of the background talent over the course of each take. Despite the explicit challenges though, the outcome of the film proves that she clearly had an eagle eye’s view on every single one of the background actors, as the continuity of the costumes come across flawlessly throughout the film.

An expert in her field, Sass’s work as a costumer means that she has to understand every elemental detail present within the costumes worn on screen to ensure that the characters in the film come across with seamless authenticity. For “War Machine,” that meant extensive research on Sass’s part into the various uniforms and patches that represent military rank.

She explains, “A war film might sound dull from the costume aspect but we had a lot of different nations so I learned a lot about the differences, ranks, badges and insignia. The film plays around 2009 so the US uniforms also were different at that time than they’re today.”

It’s not surprising that Sass’s work went off without a hitch when it came to “War Machine,” not only because she has been working as a costumer on high profile productions for many years, but this is also not her first war film. In 2014 she was a lead costumer on the documentary feature “Ein blinder Held – Die Liebe des Otto Weidt” aka “The Blind Hero: Otto Weidt,” which was set during World War II. Nominated for a German Television Academy Award, “The Blind Hero: Otto Weidt” directed by Kai Christiansen (“The Cuba Libre Story”), which stars Adolf Grimme Award winner Edgar Selge (“The Experiment”) and Bambi Award winner Henriette Confurius (“Beloved Sister”), depicts the heroic true story of Otto Weidt, who risked his life to save his Jewish employees, as well as the life of his lover Alice Licht, from the Nazis.

“Not only was it a great production to work on for the retelling of historic events and portrayal of the characters and their costumes, it is also always a challenge to do right by people by being as accurate as possible,” Sass explains. “It is a great responsibility in the costume department to get the accuracy right when it comes to real life happenings, especially when it is about a time of historical importance and when you still have actual eyewitnesses who would be offended by a bad portrayal.”

Federal Employees, Interns Receive Annual WRP Award

WASHINGTON, July 29, 2017 — The Army, along with five federal employees and interns, received the 2017 Judith C. Gilliom Award during the annual Workforce Recruitment Program awards ceremony and networking event at the U.S. Access Board here Thursday.

The Workforce Recruitment Program connects college students and recent graduates who have disabilities with federal sector employers for the opportunity to participate in paid internships.  The Office of Diversity Management and Equal Opportunity manages the Defense Department’s participation in the WRP.

Warren Whitlock, the deputy assistant secretary of the Army for diversity and leadership, accepted the 2017 Judith C. Gilliom Component Award of the Year on behalf of the Army’s commitment to individuals with disabilities.

“It feels great. It’s good to be recognized for the work we do to help advance opportunities for people with disabilities,” Whitlock said. “It’s also emblematic of the Army’s commitment to ensuring there is fairness, equality and opportunity for everyone.”

Camerron Barlow, a WRP intern with the Defense Contract Management Agency, said he was ecstatic to receive the award.

“It’s quite surreal,” he said. “Being here in Washington, D.C., where all the history is. It’s quite [an honor].”

Life Changing Opportunities

Barlow said he wouldn’t be where he is today without the WRP. “There were job fairs I went to because I was part of the WRP. The opportunities it created for me are life changing. I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for the WRP,” he said. Barlow said he recommends the internship program to fellow college students and that he loves how his fellow employees don’t see his disability but see him as a fellow employee. “There was no difference from the beginning. As soon as I stepped into the room, I was Camerron Barlow, not Camerron Barlow with a disability.”

The other 2017 award recipients were Dominica Dunston, Defense Human Resource Activity, WRP recipient; Joanne Hamilton, Defense Contract Audit Agency, WRP recipient; and Angela Love, Army, WRP coordinator.

Michael Cowley earned the inaugural 2017 WRP Recruiter of the year award. He has been a recruiter for Defense Logistics Agency for 13 years and has recruited more than 130 interns in support of the WRP. More than 50 of the interns have transitioned to become permanent employees in the federal workforce.

For more than 20 years, the WRP has been advancing employment opportunities for college students and recent graduates with disabilities. The WRP is a federal recruitment and referral program that connects federal sector employers nationwide and around the globe with college students and recent graduates with disabilities for summer internships and permanent jobs.

In 2017, the WRP database contained profiles of more than 1,800 job candidates from nearly every state and represented more than 115 colleges and universities nationwide, representing all academic backgrounds. WRP participants serve nationwide and around the globe, including Europe and South Korea.

“This has been a great pipeline for the DoD,” said Clarence Johnson, director of the Office of Diversity Management and Equal Opportunity. “It’s a program where managers get an opportunity to see what a person with a disability can really bring to the workforce. What folks with disabilities can do is amazing. The nation really needs to catch up as far as tapping the potential of people with disabilities because they’ve got great things to contribute.”

The Judith C. Gilliom Awards

Since 2009, the Office of Diversity Management and Equal Opportunity staff have presented the Judith C. Gilliom WRP awards to participants who exemplify the professional attributes promoted by the WRP and make an impact on their agency or component during their tenure, The awards honor the legacy and advocacy of Gilliom, who served as the DoD disability program manager for 25 years and was one of the founders of the WRP. She is represented as an exemplar in the Pentagon’s Defense Career Civilians of Distinction display.

“I personally worked with Judith Gilliom for eight years, and she was one of the most inspirational people I’ve ever met,” Johnson said. “She was a very dedicated and professional federal worker with integrity and high work standards.  In fact, I have a picture of her on my desk right now because every day, I look at her, and I’m inspired by her.”

Advice for the Awardees

Keynote speaker Andrea Walton, a WRP alumna, is now an Equal Opportunity Office specialist for the State Department.

She recommended to the awardees and WRP interns in attendance to “always be an intern no matter what level you are able to rise to throughout your career … being very eager to ask questions, the willingness to take on any sort of tasks, whether that’s a menial or a big time project, being passionate about whatever you’re doing, those are wonderful qualities I hope everyone possess at any level,” Walton said.

Walton credits her success to people who believed in her, helped set her up for success and empowered. She advised them that once they reached a level of influence to remember what it was like to be an intern and “think about being the boss, the manager, team lead you would like to have and be that for other people. Realize you were given an amazing opportunity from somebody else that believed in you and do that for somebody else,” she said.
